NICE After-School

About Our Programs

The video below gives more information about our programs through the eyes of one of our students, Mera. Click to learn more about our after-school programs and Mera's story.

What We Do:

The Nashville International Center for Empowerment (NICE) operates after-school programs at 3 locations-- Antioch High School. Glencliff High School, and McMurray Middle School. Through tutoring and enrichment activities, our after-school programming is specifically designed to help refugee and immigrant students succeed.

Our after-school programs have 3 main goals:
  • To promote English language learning and academic skills, especially for youth who have had limited/interrupted access to education, to enable them to graduate from high school and to create options for their futures.
  • To provide a safe space for immigrant and refugee youth where their individual abilities are recognized and celebrated
  • To facilitate the successful integration of immigrant and refugee youth into the US School System by providing mentorship and social support

Where We Work:

The NICE after-school program serves students at three different sites. Our locations and times are:
  • Antioch High School: Mondays and Wednesdays 2:15pm-5pm
  • Glencliff High School: Tuesdays and Thursday 2:15pm-5pm
  • McMurray Middle School: Mondays-Thursdays 4:00pm-6:00pm

Why It Matters:

Many of our students have just arrived in the US and are dealing with the stresses of not only starting at a new school, but also having to learn everything in a new language. Many have had interrupted educational backgrounds and/or are entering a traditional school setting for the first time. Our after-school programs serve as a safe space where students can make new friends, escape the social pressures of school, and receive some much needed academic support.

When asked about why they come to after-school programs, our students respond "anything that you are struggling with, you can come here and they will help you. You just have to find a way not to give up."

How YOU Can Help:

Volunteers play a vital role in the success of our after school programs! We are always looking for new volunteers who are interested in serving as tutors and mentors for our students. Serving as a volunteer is a great opportunity to invest in the lives of our students and learn about the international communities of Nashville. If interested, please call 615-454-5207 or e-mail marynelle@empowernashville.org.

The Five Principals of Positive Youth Development:

NICE After-School Programs strive to live up the the Five Principals of Positive Youth Development as adopted by the Nashville Youth Coalition. They are as follows:
  • Promote a Sense of Physical, Social and Emotional Safety.  Youth must feel as though the adults in this setting will protect them from any harm.  They also must feel they are valued and accepted by the group.
  •  Encourage Relationship Building.  Young people need many supportive long-term relationships to help them navigate their adolescence.  They need guidance from caring adults as well as emotional and practical support from their peers.
  • Foster Meaningful Youth Participation.  Youth must have an active role, voice and choice in shaping their experiences.  They must have the opportunity to practice and develop leadership skills, and they must know their contributions are valuable.
  • Provide Opportunities for Building Purpose.  Young people must live purposefully and contribute in meaningful ways.  Creating opportunities for youth to become involved in the community and for community members to interact with youth is a powerful way to foster a sense of purpose and develop positive values.
  • Engage Youth in Learning Experiences that Build Valuable and Healthy Life Skills.  Young people need opportunities for experiential learning that will help them build skills needed to succeed in every area of life.
